The Alchemy of Faith: Transforming Duplicate Devotion into Original Shraddha
The Leela
In the sacred precincts of Shirdi, Baba decided to test the mettle of his devotees—not through a miracle of abundance, but through a terrifying command. He called out for a knife, declaring His intent to slaughter a goat. The request sent ripples of confusion through the devotees. Radhakrishnamai, usually compliant, recoiled and withdrew the knife she had initially brought. Madhavrao Deshpande (Shama), the intimate devotee, hid himself, his mind plagued by the moral dilemma of violence.
Then came Kaka Saheb Dixit, a pious Brahmin for whom non-violence was a rigid way of life. Yet, when Baba demanded he strike, Kaka Saheb’s hand did not tremble with hesitation, but with the weight of absolute obedience. He raised the knife, his eyes closed, ready to sever the head of the goat—and simultaneously sever his own ego and social conditioning.
Just as the blade was about to fall, Baba roared, 'Stop!' The test was not of violence, but of Shraddha (Faith) so pure that it transcended logic, morality, and the self. Kaka Saheb had proven that the Guru's word was his only scripture, mirroring the ancient sacrifice of Ibrahim, where the intent to surrender was valued over the act itself.
? The Conflict / Doubt
Is our devotion merely a transaction—'I worship so I may receive'—and can such Duplicate Faith withstand the storms of life when prayers go unanswered?
The Revelation
True spirituality is not a shelter from the storm, but the strength to keep the lamp lit within it. Baba teaches that Original Faith is not a fair-weather friend; it is born from the womb of Saburi (Patience).
- The Trap of Duplicate Faith: If we chant 'Baba, Baba' only when He fulfills our wishes or cures our ailments, our faith is borrowed. It is transactional. As soon as the favors stop, the devotion crumbles.
- The Function of Saburi: Patience is not just waiting; it is maintaining emotional equilibrium. It is tested in two extremes:
- In Sorrow: Remaining hopeful when surrounded by thorns.
- In Prosperity: Remaining grounded and egoless when surrounded by luxury.
- The Thorns are His Grace: The difficulties we face are not punishments but necessary friction to ignite true faith.
As the Sai Satcharitra (Ch 29) reveals through the metaphor of the thorny path:
"I laid these troubles so that your duplicate Shraddha converts to original... Only then does true remembrance of Sai take place."
Original Shraddha is unconditional. It sings the song of total surrender: "Whether you carry me across or drown me in the middle of the stream, I am Yours."
