The Ultimate Prayer for Liberation: Wisdom from Sai Satcharitra Chapter 25
The Leela
The genesis of this profound wisdom lies in a divine interaction recorded in the second chapter of the Sai Satcharitra. When Hemadpant expressed his burning desire to chronicle the life and teachings of Sai Baba, the Master gave a conditional approval that redefined the nature of authorship. Baba did not merely grant permission; He established the spiritual ground rules. He declared, "You cannot write my life story, you just subdue your ego and offer it to my feet. The day you will become ego-less, I shall narrate my own tale myself through you."
Because Baba Himself is the narrator, the Sai Satcharitra is not a mere biography but a divine autobiography penned through the instrument of a surrendered devotee. Within this sacred text, specifically in Chapter 25, Baba bestows a precious gem upon us. Just as a compassionate father holds his child's hand to teach him how to walk, through these verses, Baba teaches His devotees exactly how to pray. He invites us to turn inward, concentrate the mind, and drink the sweet nectar of this plea for liberation.
? The Conflict / Doubt
How can a soul, hopelessly entangled in the Samsara (ocean of worldly life) and driven by unruly senses, find a way to escape the futile cycle of birth and death when its very nature has been to 'run after sensual pleasures'?
The Revelation
The prayer from Chapter 25 serves as a comprehensive spiritual roadmap, guiding the devotee from the chaos of the senses to the peace of the Self:
- The Nature of the Trap: We must first acknowledge that worldly life offers "not a moment's rest" and that we are often carried away "rudderless on the tumultuous waves" of existence.
- Control of the Senses: Bliss is impossible without discipline. The prayer implores the Sadguru to "build a dam" on the wild river of the senses.
"As long as the senses are not controlled and turned inward, the self can never be revealed and without that how can one enjoy the highest bliss?"
- The True Companion: We must realize the impermanence of earthly bonds. At the final moment, neither wife, son, nor friends can assist.
"You and you alone are the friend, the companion to the end. Only you can give us happiness and liberation."
- The Cure for Ego: The ultimate solution is to eradicate the "evil of argumentation," conquer the ego, and let the tongue become addicted to the Divine Name.
"If you embrace us and take to your refuge then The Dark Night of ignorance will disappear and we shall abide happily in your light."
