The Mystery of the Two Lizards: A Journey to Satchitananda
The Leela
In the sacred atmosphere of Dwarkamai, a curious incident unfolded that would reveal profound spiritual truths. One day, Shirdi Sai Baba was sitting surrounded by His devotees when a lizard on the wall began to chirrup loudly. Startled by the sound, a devotee asked, "Baba, why is this lizard chirruping? Is it a bad omen?"
Baba, with a knowing smile, replied that the lizard was not signaling an omen, but was joyous in anticipation of her sister's arrival from Aurangabad. The devotee was left bewildered, lost in thought over such a strange answer—how could a lizard have a sister arriving from a distant city?
However, the mystery unraveled shortly after. A gentleman arrived from Aurangabad on horseback to have Baba's Darshan. As he sat down, he emptied his bag to dust it off. Suddenly, a lizard darted out from the folds of the bag and hastily ran towards the lizard residing in Dwarkamai. Baba instructed the devotee to watch them closely. As soon as the two creatures met, they kissed and circled each other, dancing as if celebrating a festival of pure joy. The reunion left the devotees in awe of Baba's omniscience.
? The Conflict / Doubt
Can animals truly possess such deep relationships and omniscience, or was there a deeper meaning behind Baba's explanation? The devotee was initially skeptical, wondering why Baba gave such a seemingly strange answer to a question about omens.
Furthermore, the deeper inquiry arises: Why did Baba interpret a simple biological event as a meeting of sisters? Is this merely a miracle of foresight, or is it an allegory for the internal dynamics of the spiritual seeker?
The Revelation
This Leela is not just a display of Baba's all-knowing nature; it is a profound allegory for the journey of the human soul towards perfection (Parampurushartha).
- Beyond Superstition: Baba refused to validate the concept of "good" or "bad" omens. He taught that everything is the Will of God. To focus on omens is ignorance; a spiritual seeker must rise above such trivial fears.
- The Symbolism of the Lizards:
- The Dwarkamai Lizard (Elder Sister): Represents the Intellect (Sat). She is considered "elder" because she resides constantly in the Guru's company, under His direct radiance, filled with eternal wisdom (Nityanitya Vivek).
- The Aurangabad Lizard (Younger Sister): Represents the Mind (Chit). She comes from "outside," representing the mind that wanders the world, snared by external distractions.
- The Great War: The scriptures describe the greatest human effort (Purushartha) as the battle to bring the wandering mind under the control of the wisdom-filled intellect. The mind is accustomed to roaming, making it difficult to tame.
- Satchitananda: The joyous reunion of the lizards symbolizes the ultimate spiritual state. When the wandering Mind (Chit) returns to the feet of the Guru and submits to the enlightened Intellect (Sat), the result is pure Bliss (Ananda).
"When 'chit' meets with 'sat', then is 'Satchitanand'. This is the depth of the Leela."
